Aerial Lift Safety: Essential Training Points for Operators

Aerial lifts have revolutionized work at height, but they remain one of the leading causes of construction fatalities when used improperly. Whether you're using a scissor lift, boom lift, or bucket truck, these safety essentials apply.

Before You Operate

Training Requirements

OSHA requires that all aerial lift operators receive training specific to the type of equipment they'll use. This training must cover:

  • Operating instructions and warnings
  • Workplace hazards and how to avoid them
  • Equipment inspection procedures
  • Emergency procedures

Pre-Operation Inspection

Never skip the daily inspection. Check:

  • Controls and safety devices function properly
  • No visible damage or leaks
  • Tires/outriggers are in good condition
  • Platform and guardrails are secure
  • Fuel/battery levels are adequate

Safe Operating Practices

Ground Conditions

  • Ensure firm, level ground before extending outriggers
  • Stay away from holes, drop-offs, and slopes
  • Be aware of underground utilities and overhead obstructions
  • Set up barricades if working near traffic

Working at Height

  • Always wear a harness attached to the anchor point
  • Keep both feet on the platform floor
  • Never climb on guardrails or use ladders on the platform
  • Don't exceed rated load capacity
  • Avoid side-loading the platform

Weather Awareness

  • Wind limits vary by machine — know your equipment's ratings
  • Rain can make platforms slippery
  • Lightning requires immediate descent and shelter
  • Cold weather affects hydraulics and batteries

Common Hazards

Electrocution

  • Maintain minimum clearance from power lines (varies by voltage)
  • Treat all power lines as energized
  • Use a spotter when working near electrical hazards

Tip-Over

  • Never drive with the platform elevated
  • Don't exceed rated platform capacity
  • Watch for potholes and uneven surfaces

Falls

  • Always use fall protection
  • Enter and exit only at ground level
  • Keep the platform clean and free of debris

Emergency Procedures

Know how to:

  • Lower the platform using ground controls
  • Operate manual descent systems
  • Respond to tip-over situations
  • Evacuate in an emergency
